ML&L Cares Program Spotlight: The Fledge
About three years ago now Will and I decided to implement the ML&L Cares: Trusted Choice for Charities program. What is this? Our agency will donate $500 each month to a local area non-profit that is referred to us by YOU our clients. Just email mllcares@mllins.com with the name of the charity, a quick description and contact information for the charity.
The name of the charities that are referred to us go before our ML&L Charity committee that consists of a team member from our service, sales and management team and they select one recipient each month. The charities that were not selected stay on our list for the following month. The more times the same charity is referred the more weight it is given before the committee.
This month’s recipient is: The Fledge
We are starting the New Year off right with our first donation of 2021 with The Fledge!! Jerry Norris founder of The Fledge a Lansing based community center that hosts a wide variety of events and services throughout the year based upon the quote “Genius is lost in poverty.” There is quite a bit of poverty on the streets of Lansing and he wanted to give back to a community that gave to him. The Fledge’s mission is to “create opportunities to pursue happiness and ensure liberty and justice for all” with an emphasis on being inclusive rather than exclusive.
They provide the Lansing community with a number of impressive services like crypto currency, venues for gatherings, 3D printing, coding club, screen printing, music studio and business training all housed in their 12,000 square foot repurposed church! On top of the services listed above they also distribute food and clothing, they grow food, offer healing sessions, mental and substance abuse resources and translation of testing documents for refugees and ESL community to name a few.
Norris believes that poverty can be eliminated with three key points. The first competency and education, the second connection to marketplace and last a little bit of funding. Norris feels that by making our community stronger through the services at The Fledge we can help ourselves then climb out of poverty!
